Tender started for electric police cars

A third of basic police vehicles will become electric

Tender started for electric police cars

The BMW X1 and Ford Kuga are the new police cars with combustion engines. The first electric police cars should be put into use from 2025. The police have now started the tender for its electric cars.

The police is renewing its fleet. It recently presented its new basic police vehicles: the Ford Kuga and the BMW X1. They both have combustion engines, but the police car fleet must also consist of a fleet of electric models by 2025. Preparations for this already started last year and the tender for the basic electric police vehicles (PBVs) is now starting.

The police have a lot of things to weigh up, as they themselves say. The introduction of charging stations at police locations is being considered, but matters such as the range, the speed of the cars and maintenance are also chapters that require a lot of attention. Police officers are closely involved in drawing up the list of requirements and testing the cars. “The input from colleagues who use the vehicles every day is essential to put together a good package of requirements,” says Irene Meulenkamp, products and services manager Vehicles & Vessels. “Certainly with electric vehicles, the experience of daily users is very important to arrive at a good final judgment.”

Ultimately, a portion of basic police vehicles should consist of EVs. The selection phase will be completed in April this year. The arrival of electric PBVs must be definitively stopped by mid-2025. A few years ago the police started one pilot with electric PBVs.
