‘Full EV is often a step too far’

Imports of hybrid used cars have increased considerably

The import of used cars experienced a slight increase last year. Nevertheless, fewer second-hand petrol and diesel cars were brought to our country. The increase is entirely attributable to hybrids, led by the Toyota Yaris.

The import of used cars increased slightly last year, according to figures from the trade organization Bovag. While there were still 249,451 used cars from abroad on Dutch license plates in 2022, last year there were 254,691, an increase of more than two percent. It is striking that the share of hybrids is increasing considerably. While there were still 48,761 in 2022, last year 72,300 used hybrids were brought to our country. The most popular was the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, of which 3,857 were purchased. The Yaris Cross Hybrid comes in seventh place with 1,732 units. Other popular import hybrids are the Volkswagen Golf, the Volvo XC60, the Ford Kuga and the Toyota C-HR and RAV4.

When asked, Bovag says it has not done any research into this development, but, according to spokesperson Paul de Waal: “Demand is increasing because people want to participate in the energy transition and also want something with a plug, but a fully electric car is often still a step further. too far and thus end up with this interim solution. Furthermore, with a PHEV you only pay half the MRB. After all, gasoline was very expensive last year, while the calculating charger was able to keep its costs under control.”

That possible explanation only applies to plug-in hybrids, but what will also help is that the figures also include mild hybrids. Mild hybrid technology has been increasingly used in cars with fuel engines in recent years.
