Asking price for used cars is unprecedentedly higher than the search price

You may have noticed that used cars are still quite expensive. And while used buyers are looking for increasingly lower prices. This is evident from new figures from Automotive Mediaventions, the parent company of Gaspedal.nl and Autotrack.

The average asking price for used cars has reached new records several times in recent years. Last month it was €23,786. That is not a new record, but the gap to the average search price has never been as large as in January. The average search price has dropped considerably in recent months and stood at €16,998 in January. A difference of almost €7,000 and that has never been seen before, according to Automotive Mediaventions. The search price for petrol and electric cars in particular fell sharply last month, both by almost 7 percent. The search price for SUVs also fell by 7 percent. Convertibles take the cake; the search price of these fell by a quarter last month.

Golf, petrol and station wagon

Once again, the Volkswagen Golf takes pride of place among the most searched for models, with 2 percent of searches. The Volkswagen Polo follows in second place (1.7 percent) and the BMW 3 Series completes the top three for January. New entrants into the top 10 are the Nissan Qashqai in ninth place and the BMW 1 Series in tenth place. Among brands, Volkswagen is also at the top with 10.1 percent, followed by Audi (8 percent) and BMW (7.4 percent).

Used car seekers are mainly interested in cars with only petrol power (54.8 percent). Hybrid petrol cars are the next most popular, with 25.4 percent of searches, followed by diesel cars (8.5 percent). Electric cars account for 7.3 percent of searches. As many as 82.4 percent of searches are aimed at a car with an automatic transmission. The station wagon (25.2 percent), hatchback (23.3 percent) and SUV (17 percent) are the most popular body types.

Years and colors

Automotive Mediaventions happily continues to spread the January figures. The most popular year of manufacture is 2018, closely followed by 2020. The ‘oldest year of manufacture’ in the top 10 years of manufacture is 2010. People are mainly looking for cars with a maximum of 100,000 km (15.2 percent) or 150,000 km (10.0 percent). 2 percent) on the counter. The most popular color is still black (27.2 percent), followed by gray (17.7 percent) and blue (13.2 percent). Blue took the place of white in January, which dropped to fourth place.
