Merger not on the agenda
There are rumors about a possible takeover of Renault. There would be concerns among the French government, which is a major shareholder. However, the state says it will continue to support Renault’s independence.
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares recently mentioned competitor Renault in discussions with Autonews still ‘vulnerable’ and gave some room for interpretation as to whether there might be interest in taking over Renault. The Italian medium Il Messaggero subsequently reported that there would indeed be plans, but this was quickly contradicted by Stellantis chairman John Elkann. Now the French government is also making itself heard. As a major shareholder of Renault, this would also be open to a merger of the company with another manufacturer, but that is now also denied.
The French state declares according to Reuters that it still supports Renault’s independence and that nothing has changed in its view of this. However, according to the medium, it is admitted that Renault is not quite as widely equipped as its competitors. However, the French government wants to continue to support Renault in independently strengthening its position and, as far as is known, also supports the strategy to integrate the development of electric cars into the separate branch called Ampère. Roughly since Ampère’s planned IPO was recently nipped in the bud, rumors have emerged that Renault could be taken over.
