The EU is also relaxing driving license requirements for campers

The European Parliament has not only approved more flexible driving license guidelines for electric vans and for 17-year-olds. There are also relaxations in store for campers.

The new driving license directive that the European Parliament has approved brings good news for those who want to drive an electric van and for 17-year-olds. However, there is another group that will probably be happy with it, it turns out. Things are also becoming a bit more flexible for campers. Now you can drive campers up to 3,500 kilos with a regular B driving license, but if it is up to the European Parliament that will be 4,250 kilos. The same limit as for electric vans. The big difference: with campers it does not matter whether it is a fuel camper or an electric one.

It is expected that it will take until 2028 for the new directive to apply, but the Camping and Caravan Industry trade association (KCI) is in any case happy with this outcome. Chairman Leo Diepemaat states that it was high time for this adjustment: “Through our umbrella organization European Caravan Federation, we have been pushing for this adjustment for the B driving license in Brussels for some time. After all, campers are becoming increasingly popular, but the requirements for safety, durability and comfort also result in a higher weight. Without the vehicle being essentially different – but safer and more sustainable – owners would then be required to obtain a truck driver’s license. This of course creates a huge barrier and results in unnecessarily high costs for camper owners.”
