Will Apple be Rivian’s savior?

It seems so logical

Will Apple be Rivian’s savior?

This week we learned two things: Apple is ending its car project and the loss-making Rivian is launching two new, promising models. There is a lot of speculation on the internet about a merger of the two stories, in the form of an acquisition of Rivian by Apple.

This story is such a vague rumor that it verges on nonsense, so don’t rely too heavily on the described scenario. Still, the possibility that Apple could become interested in Rivian is not completely out of the blue. For starters, it’s actually the other way around: Rivian may be interested in Apple as an investor, merger partner or buyer. This is stated by Marketwatch, among others, which thought it saw some nods to Apple founder Steve Jobs in the behavior and comments of Rivian CEO Scaringe.

The timing is of course great: after years, Apple no longer sees any point in its own car project, and Rivian shows with the R2 and R3 that it has promising cars in the pipeline. Perhaps with the billions and Apple’s software, it will suddenly be possible to quickly turn ‘promising’ into ‘profitable’, which would be good news for both parties.

Yet it is still nothing more than a rumor and there are no official indications from Rivian or Apple that this possibility is being investigated. Does this story sound familiar to you? That is not surprising: Fisker, which is comparable to Rivian, is also not having an easy time financially and was linked to Nissan earlier this week. Maybe 2024 will be the year of rescues!
