The subsidy pot for used electric cars is already more than a third empty

Part for used EVs runs out twice as fast as part for new ones

The subsidy pot for used electric cars is already more than a third empty

At the quarter of the year, the subsidy pot to encourage the purchase of a new or used electric car is also a quarter empty. However, the part of this that is intended to boost sales of second-hand electric cars is being used up faster. This is now almost 40 percent. This is evident from an analysis of the figures from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) by AutoWeek.

The first three months of 2024 are already behind us and guess what? The speed at which the subsidy pot, which was filled with €87.4 million this year to stimulate the purchase of EVs, is being emptied in keeping with the pace at which the days pass. A total of €21.83 million in subsidies has been applied for, meaning 25 percent of the total subsidy pot has been awarded. A total of 9,224 new or used EVs have been requested for a subsidy. The majority of these are electric used cars.

As has been the case for some time now, the part of the SEPP subsidy pot that is intended to make the purchase of a second-hand electric car more attractive is being depleted considerably faster than the part that is intended for the purchase of new EVs. Initially €29.4 million was available for used electric cars. €11.33 million of this has now been allocated. So about 39 percent. A subsidy has been applied for for 5,665 electric used cars. There is still €18.07 million in SEPP subsidy left for a second-hand EV. This year, a budget can still be requested for 9,035 used electric cars.

To encourage the purchase of a new electric car, €58 million was reserved at the beginning of this year. Only 18.1 percent of this has currently been forgiven (€10.5 million). The pot for used electric cars currently appears to be emptying twice as quickly. A budget has been requested for 3,559 new EVs. There is still a budget available for 16,102 new electric cars. The subsidy pot for used EVs is therefore empty about twice as quickly as the pot for new electric cars.
