Record number of people injured by hit-and-run drivers: millions of euros in personal injury damages

There were slightly fewer ‘hit-and-run’ drivers after an accident last year than in 2022. Yet a record number of people were injured by hit-and-run drivers. This causes enormous financial damage.

It recently emerged that just under 74,000 reports were drawn up last year because someone continued driving after an accident. That was slightly less than a year earlier. But a record number of people have been injured in hit-and-run collisions. This is evident from figures obtained by the NPO Radio 1 podcast The Crime Bureau of Omroep WNL.

In 2023, the Motor Traffic Guarantee Fund received no fewer than 1,220 reports of personal injury where the perpetrator drove away after the accident. That is two hundred more than in 2022. Victims of a collision can appeal to the Guarantee Fund if no perpetrator is known. “It is the highest number in seven years, amounting to a damage amount of around €20 million,” Guarantee Fund spokesperson Jelle Smits said. “People get injured in all kinds of ways: from a broken toe to a spinal cord injury.”
