Subsidies for the purchase of second-hand electric cars will disappear

In favor of MRB discount

Subsidies for the purchase of second-hand electric cars will disappear

In the market for a second-hand electric car? Then you can only receive a purchase subsidy this year. The subsidy will no longer be available next year, according to the Spring Memorandum of the outgoing cabinet. That subsidy will disappear because of the MRB discount for electric cars.

The Spring Memorandum of 2024 has been shared and in it we see, among other things, the previously announced MRB discount for electric cars. It still looks a bit different than previously thought. As expected, you will pay 60 percent of the gasoline rate for an EV by 2026, but by 2027 this will already be 70 percent and then it will be 75 percent for another year in 2030. As of 2031, the full MRB rate will apply to electric cars. Initially, the MRB exemption for EVs would disappear completely as of 2026, so the government is losing money with these new plans. This will be compensated, among other things, by charging the full MRB for plug-in hybrid cars next year, but also by abolishing the purchase subsidy for second-hand electric cars.

Now you can still receive a €2,000 SEPP subsidy under certain conditions if you buy a second-hand electric car and that would remain the case for years, but now it appears to be over after this year. “A total of €528 million had been reserved until 2029 for the extension of the purchase subsidy for second-hand electric passenger cars (SEPP). However, the extension of the scheme will not take place because a new rate discount for emission-free passenger cars is being introduced in motor vehicle tax,” as stated in the Spring Memorandum.
