Bugatti Veyron designer starts drawing MGs

The Chinese SAIC Motor has managed to attract a big name from the automotive industry for its daughter brand MG. Jozef Kabaň, who recently left Volkswagen, will work there as chief designer.

The Bugatti Veyron, Volkswagen Lupo and third generation Skoda Octavia have something in common besides parent company Volkswagen Group: the Slovakian designer Jozef Kabaň put them on paper. He later worked very briefly – just six months – as Head of Design at Rolls-Royce, before returning to Volkswagen. That was not really a success, because Volkswagen first reduced Kabaň from chief designer to a lower position and then did not renew his contract. CEO Thomas Schäfer, who had taken office in the meantime, would not have been a fan of Kabaň’s work (including the ultimately completely discarded ID Life Concept from 2021).

Now 51-year-old Kabaň has found a new employer in the Chinese SAIC, which puts him at the helm of MG’s design department. With its broad experience in the European automotive industry, Kabaň can ensure a design for Chinese cars that is well tailored to the European market.
