‘Most employers provide maximum tax-free travel allowance’

But is it enough…

‘Most employers provide maximum tax-free travel allowance’

Employers are not obliged to pay travel expenses, but the majority do. This is evident from research by employers’ organization AWVN.

A travel allowance for commuting seems only logical, but some employees simply have to pay for their own transport to the workplace. However, according to employers’ organization AWVN, there are relatively not many, because no fewer than 92 percent of employers say they offer compensation. Report about that The Telegraph. Not only that, but according to that medium, the AWVN also sees that about two-thirds of employers who offer travel allowance also pay out the maximum tax-free amount. That is €0.23 per kilometer.

Beautiful in itself, you might say. However, the costs of transport, especially driving, have become so high that, according to various parties, the travel allowance no longer covers the costs. Earlier this year, the Business Drivers Association advocated compensation of €0.35 per km. Research by the VZR also showed that around 60 percent of employees receive €0.23 or more per km. In 2022, the AWVN still saw considerable willingness among employers to increase travel allowances, but at that time it still stood at €0.19 per km. The question is whether a majority is now prepared for a further increase.
