In times gone by, people still laughed about the Mercedes-Benz A-class, but now this smallest Benz is a household name become. And because the A-class is considered an entry-level Mercedes, it is relatively popular among young buyers. But what exactly do A-class buyers want from their used ‘baby Benz’? Which options are popular and how thick should the A-class used car be on average? We dug into the figures and discovered, among other things, that almost everyone wants an AMG Line. Because of course people want that.
The moose trial is far behind us
When the Mercedes-Benz A-class was introduced in 1997, the car quickly became the subject of widespread ridicule when a Swedish publication subjected the car to the so-called ‘moose test’. This is a test in which the car suddenly swerves to the side to avoid a large object (in Sweden, often a moose). Instead of smoothly avoiding the object, the first generation of the A-class tipped over. Mercedes quickly resolved this problem by equipping the car with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and will be happy that this problem arose well before the memeera presented itself.
The A-class is now a smooth hatchback or sedan that knows how to find a large audience. But what does that audience want?
More than a million searches
According to figures from Gaspedal.nl a Mercedes-Benz A-class was searched for more than 1.2 million times in 2023, making it the second most popular Benz. The title of most wanted Mercedes has long gone to the C-class and it is striking that the other compact Mercedes, the B-class, scores a lot less well. We only find this type in seventh place. In total, a Mercedes-Benz will be searched for more than 15 million times by 2023.
Panoramic roof and navigation
If buyers start to make demands on their A-class, it is noticeable that an automatic transmission, a panoramic roof and a navigation system are particularly popular. Furthermore, the vast majority of buyers want a petrol model. In terms of construction years, people are mainly looking for models from 2018, 2019 and 2020. The A180 and the A200 are popular, but do not match those famous three letters, which always stand for a very big Benz.
AMG all the way
Mercedes offers buyers the opportunity to make their A-class thicker, thanks to the AMG Line. Do not confuse this with the full-fledged AMG version that leaves ripples in the asphalt with its 400+ hp; This is the AMG Line, where the car looks like a full-fledged AMG, but has a decent engine. However, that sturdy appearance, with thick wheels, wide wheel arches and a series of other sporty additions, is very appealing and so the keyword ‘AMG’ is by far the most popular addition in a search.
Is the Limousine still participating?
Since 2018, the A-class range has been expanded to include the Limousine. This is a compact, four-door variant of the equally compact hatchback. And this variant scores well, although it will never overtake the hatchback. In 2023, people searched twice as often for the original shape of the A-class than for this small sedan.
