If you have heartburn, you don’t have to resort to medication straight away. Home remedies such as baking soda can also be effective against heartburn. We’ll explain to you how it works and how best to use it.
Heartburn occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. This creates a burning feeling behind the breastbone and an unpleasant feeling of pressure. Heartburn can have various causes and if it occurs frequently, you should definitely seek medical attention.
Causes of heartburn can be, for example:
- eating too quickly
- too heavy and fatty food
- Obesity and stress
- physical problems, for example a weakening of the stomach sphincter.
Simple home remedies can help against occasional heartburn, for example after heavy, fatty food. Baking soda is also an effective helper against heartburn. We’ll explain how best to use it.
Good to know: Baking soda is also a very versatile home remedy that you can also use for cleaning or making natural care products.

Baking soda consists of sodium and hydrogen carbonate. Hydrogen carbonate has a basic effect and when combined with water, CO2 is formed. The combination of hydrogen carbonate and CO2 can neutralize acids.
When you have heartburn, your stomach is over-acidic and stomach acid rises. In the short term, taking baking soda for acute symptoms can lead to:
- the stomach acid is neutralized,
- the burning feeling in the chest area and the feeling of pressure are relieved,
- the heartburn stops.
Baking soda helps against acute heartburn fairly quickly and effectively and can be a cheap alternative to remedies from the pharmacy.
Taking baking soda for heartburn
Baking soda is available as a powder in common drugstores and supermarkets.
When taking baking soda for heartburn, you can stick to the following dosage:
-
Dissolve 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and
- Drink 1-3 times a day.
- It’s best to start with a low dosage and then increase if you don’t feel any effect.
There is even a special baking soda product that is sold specifically as a remedy for heartburn: the so-called Bullrich salt. You can buy it without a prescription at the pharmacy or order it online, for example from Amazon.

Baking soda is an effective remedy for acute complaints. However, you should not treat heartburn yourself over a longer period of time.
Important: If you often suffer from heartburn, you should discuss the symptoms with a medical professional or pharmacist to rule out more serious illnesses.
- If you take baking soda regularly, you also run the risk of manipulating the pH of your stomach. Since the stomach needs a certain amount of acid for digestion to function smoothly, you should not consume too much of the powder.
- Be aware that by taking baking soda you are only treating the symptoms and not the causes of heartburn.
- Before taking it, you should also test whether you are allergic to baking soda.
