The owners of a Fritz! Box can use their router as a Wireguard VPN Server. This allows you to make a secure connection with your home network from the internet connection. If you go on the internet after this, you will do that with your home IP address. That gives you the possible to bypass geographical limitations, for example viewing NPO Start from abroad.
Wireguard creates an encrypted tunnel between two or more devices, creating a safe connection. The protocol uses advanced cryptographic techniques to secure data transfer.
The support for Wireguard is available from Fritz! OS version 7.39 or higher. With the recent update to Fritz! OS 8, the Wireguard functionality has been further expanded, with IPv6 support now also added to the Wireguard tunnel.
Creating a wireguard connection is fairly simple and you do from the Fritz! Box web interface. Below we explain how you can create a connection and set under iOS and macOS. Before you start setting the VPN connection, it is wise to install the Wireguard app on your Mac and/or iOS device.
Create Wireguard connection on the Fritz! Box
The Fritz! Box is equipped with a Wireguard VPN server with which clients can make a safe connection. It is wise to set a separate connection per client (device). You can create a connection as follows:
- Go to in Fritz! Box Web interface to: Internet> Give access> VPN (Wireguard)
- Click on the ‘Add connection’ button
- In the Wireguard-Wizard, select the ‘connecting device only’ option and click the ‘Next’ button.
- Give the connection a name.
- Click on the ‘Complete’ button, after which you have to confirm the creation of the connection by pressing a button of the Fritz! Box or by filling in a two factor code.
On the screen that is now shown you can scan a QR code (for iPhone and iPad) or download the connection data (macOS). Please note that your screen does not close, because the data is only shown for safety reasons now and can no longer be requested afterwards. Have lost the connection data, then delete the connection and add a new connection.
Set a Wireguard connection on the iPhone or iPad
Installing and setting the Wireguard app under iOS is fairly simple, through the steps below.

- Download the app in the App Store and open the app.
- Tap the plus ‘+’ and then on ‘Scan from QR code’.
- Scan the QR code shown with the camera of your iPhone or iPad.
- Give the connection a recognizable name.
The connection has now been added to the Wireguard app, by activating the switch in the overview behind the connection you activate the VPN connection.
You can also activate the VPN connection from the iOS Settings app. Open the Settings app and select VPN. You can find all the added VPN connections here.
Set a Wireguard connection to macOS
Under macOS you cannot use the QR code, you must download the settings from the Fritz! Box, a so-called .ConF file.

- Click on ‘Download Settings’ in the Fritz! Box Web interface to use the settings for your connection.
- Install the app from the Mac App Store
- Start Wireguard app and click on ‘Import tunnel (s) from file’.
- Import the downloaded .ConF file from step 1.
- Give the connection a recognizable name.
The connection has now been added to the Wireguard app, select the added connection and click on ‘Activate’ to activate the VPN connection. You can also do this from the macOS menu bar, click on the Wireguard symbol and select the connection.
