It may happen that you do not want to open a certain document, video or other file in the standard application for this type. QuickTime is a program that always opens videos on your Mac. That is handy, but in some cases you just want that one video to be opened in another video player.
Under macOS it is possible to choose a standard application for all parts with the same file type. This way you can open all PDF documents with PDF search or all DOCX documents in Pages. Follow the tip below to change this.
Always open file types with a certain app
- Finder
- Navigate to the file
- Click on the file with a secondary click
- In the context menu, select the ‘Show info’ option
- Search in the window obtained for the ‘Open with’ option

Do you find the option ‘Open with’ not? Then you can open it by clicking on the triangle. The dropdown menu then appears and you can then select an application of your choice.
Once you have selected an app, click on the ‘Change everything’ option, confirm the adjustment and close the Inforer. From now on all file types will be opened with the app you have chosen.
