Apple regularly gives the AirPods new functions. And according to Bloomberg there will be a function this year. This is perhaps one of the best functions you will see on the AirPods.

It is a position that will probably become part of iOS 19. With this new function for the AirPods you can now have a conversation with someone who does not speak your language. The AirPods use the translation app for this. That app already has this kind of functionality, but then you use the iPhone to have a conversation.

With the update for the AirPods you no longer have to grab the iPhone. The ears pick up the spoken text automatically, send them to the translation app on your iPhone and then you will automatically hear the translation on your AirPods.

So it is not yet a ‘universal translator’ that you might know from Star Trek, but the beginning is there. And if Apple knows how to improve this further, it might be the best function ever for the AirPods.

The handy thing about this function is that you can easily have a conversation in another country, without having to speak to the language or the translation app on your iPhone. It is not yet known how fast the translation goes through the ears, but the app is now quite quickly with translations. The translation via the AirPods will probably be quite smooth.

More improvements for the translation app

In addition to this new feature for the AirPods in iOS 19, Apple, according to rumors, is also planning to further improve the translation app. It is not yet known what Apple will add, but at the moment the translation apps from Google and Microsoft are just a little better than Apple’s variant. So there are some things that could be better.

AirPods Pro 3 to arrive

Apple will also come this year with new AirPods Pro 3. But they only come out somewhere in the last quarter of 2025. It therefore seems that this new translation function will also come to the current generation of the AirPods.

But we cannot say which ears that will be exactly. The AirPods Pro 2 and the AirPods 4 (€ 132.66) will probably get the position at least.
