Just update! Apple has released iOS 18.6.2, with which important security problems are solved on the iPhone. With interim software updates, Apple regularly solves major protection problems. In this case it is a software error in the way iPhones process image files. That did not happen in a safe way in iOS 18.6.1.
According to Apple, the previous software version of the iPhone was vulnerable to malignant images. These images seem normal, but can ensure that the iPhone makes a mistake in the memory. Malicious people can then abuse these mistakes, for example to take control of the iPhone and steal data. This vulnerability was resolved in iOS 18.6.2.
Install update
Does your iPhone run on iOS 18.6.1? Install the newest software version immediately, because the security vulnerable has already been abused according to Apple. That means that the iPhone is vulnerable and the security of the device is not in order. Apple only releases these types of interim updates with large software errors, so it is important to install iOS 18.6.2 as quickly as possible. You do that as follows:
- Go to ‘Settings’ on your iPhone;
- Choose ‘General’;
- Go to ‘Software update’;
- Tap ‘Work now at’ under iOS 18.6.2.
It is advisable to immediately install the new software version, so that you are sure that the security of your iPhone is back in order. According to Apple, the vulnerability can only be abused by very advanced and targeted attacks. The chance is therefore small that your iPhone has fallen victim to such an attack, but with iOS 18.6.2 you no longer run a risk. Therefore, install the update as soon as possible.

In addition to iOS 18.6.2, Apple has released more important updates. For other Apple devices, iPados 18.6.2, macOS Sequoia‌ 15.6.1, iPados 17.7.10, macOS 14.7.8 and macOS 13.7.8 are now available. That means that it is a large security vulnerable, so that the security of the iPhone, iPad and Mac is not in order. Therefore, make sure that you not only update your iPhone, but also install the latest software versions on your iPad and Mac.
With iOS 18.6.2, Apple does not bring new functions to the iPhone. Important security problems are solved instead.
