The background noises, such as rain, ocean and noise, help the user to concentrate or relax by masking disturbing environmental sounds. Those who are in possession of a homepod can activate these sounds with the help of speech or automation.
Consult background noises
On an iPhone or iPad you have been able to play directly since background noises directly from the accessibility intensions. That works as follows:
- Open settings
- Navigate to ‘accessibility’
- Tap ‘Audio and Visual’
- Choose ‘background noises’
- Call in the option
- Choose a desired sound
- Personalize the playback

You can apply the steps below from iOS 18.4 and iPados 18.4
Playing background noises via the accessibility settings is quite cumbersome. That is why you can now also play the soothing sounds directly from the control panel.
- Open the control panel
- Tap the plus button
- Choose ‘Add a controller’
- Search for ‘background music’
- Select the desired controllers

Once you have added the controller, you can tap these to immediately play the background music. A mini app for these sounds is opened so that you can pause them, resume or adjust the volume.
Because the controls for the control panel can be used in several places, you can also add the soothing sounds to the access screen or action button.
