Despite a substantial loss in the second quarter, the BMW Group nevertheless managed to record black figures for the first half of 2020.
BMW and its subsidiaries, Mini and Rolls-Royce, saw sales fall by 23 percent in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. In total, the brands sold 962,575 cars in the months of April, May and June. BMW came in at 842,153 cars sold (-21.7 percent), Mini at 118,862 (-31.1 percent) and Rolls-Royce at 1,560 cars (-37.6 percent). Not only were the sales significantly lower than last year, the yield also fell sharply. Before tax, there is a loss of € 300 million in the second quarter.
Although the second quarter caused a significant blow to the figures, BMW still managed to record a profit for the first half of the year thanks to a still strong first quarter. The group records a profit of € 498 million before tax. A significant decrease (-74.6 percent) compared to the first half of 2019; back then € 2.97 billion was made.
For the second half of the year, BMW is counting on improving sales. Overall, the Bavarian group expects to make a profit, despite the challenging circumstances.
