Not everything you can eat without hesitation is also risk -free on vacation. We list a few food groups where you should exercise caution abroad.

On vacation we not only want to see the culture of a country, but also taste. But be careful: some foods can quickly become a health risk abroad.

Here are foods that you should avoid better on vacation.

1. Raw seafood and fish

Although fresh oysters can be tempting, they are not always a good choice on vacation. The consumer advice center warns that raw mussels are often stressed with hepatitis A viruses or other pathogens, especially in the Mediterranean or Atlantic. Consumed seafood is therefore only well cooked.

The tropical institute points out that there are not only edible but also toxic fish species. Therefore, you should only eat fishing yourself if you are 100 percent sure which one is.

2. Raw meat

Raw meat, such as Carpaccio or Tartare, also carries considerable risk of food poisoning. Pathogens such as salmonella, trichins or dangerous parasites can be hidden in raw meat. You should also do without half -cooked dishes – through -cooked meat is a safer choice.

3. Raw costal salads

Salads often do not contain animal products and are healthy – but therefore no safe choice on vacation. In many countries, salads are washed with tap water, which may be loaded with bacteria or parasites. According to the consumer center, this affects many countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Therefore, avoid raw food dishes in restaurants or at streets and choose cooked, fried or cooked dishes instead. If you want to prepare a salad or other raw food on vacation, then wash it thoroughly with cleaned water.

4. Unknown fruit

Better buy fruit as a whole so that you can wash it yourself with the right hygiene and peel it yourself.

You should always wash fruit thoroughly abroad and also peel. Use the best packed drinking water when the tap water is not safe – see point eight. The consumer advice center recommends that we can refrain from pre -cut fruit on the side of the road – here germs quickly accumulate that can cause stomach problems.

5. Buffets with cool dishes

Buffets, which are unmistaked in a warmer climate for several hours, are an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, according to the consumer center. Cold dishes such as salads or desserts that spoil slightly are particularly risky.

Better grab beyond freshly prepared, hot dishes to be on the safe side.

6. Raw eggs and products from it (also ice cream!)

You should avoid dishes that contain raw eggs, such as mayonnaise or some desserts. Otherwise there may be existing salmonella in the eggs. Pasteurized products are the safer alternative.

While you can usually eat industrially packaged ice cream in travel countries, you should take a closer look at ice cream parlors: does the ice contain raw egg? If so, only buy there as soon as you are sure that hygiene is flawless when manufacturing.

7. Freshly squeezed fruit juices

According to the consumer center, there is no risk of industrially packaged juices – and other drinks.

With freshly squeezed juices, however, you should take a look at whether the fruit presses, containers and hands of the sellers are clean: inside. Otherwise pathogens could get into the juice.

8. Tap water and ice cubes

Even if the tap water is declared as “drinkable” in many countries, you should be careful. This affects many countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Avoid drinking water directly out of the tap or brushing your teeth with it. The recommendation of the consumer advice center: instead use filled drinking water or cook the water at least five minutes to kill pathogens. Then you should filter it.

The tropical institute gives other options: You can clean tap water with special disinfection tablets. With boiling water freshly prepared tea and coffee are usually harmless. Beer and wine are also not a problem. However, the institute also warns of too cold drinks in hot weather, as the stomach can react sensitively. You can get more information here: What better helps in heat: cold or warm drinks?

In warm countries, ice cubes are often made from tap water that does not correspond to the same hygienic standards as in Germany. If they melt in the drink, there is also a risk here. You can find out more here:

9. Raw milk and non -pasteurized products from it

Non -pasteurized milk and products – for example raw milk cheese – can contain dangerous pathogens such as listeria. Avoid these products and instead reach for pasteurized dairy products.
