Bought new iPhone: Make sure you transfer all your data and apps

Have you bought a new iPhone? Then you will probably transfer your old data from one iPhone to another. This is possible in different ways, but always pay attention, some apps are not fully transferred.

In some cases you have to manually activate DigiD, bank apps and authenticator applications and transfer data. We explain what you should pay attention to and how you ensure that you completely transfer all your data and apps.

Transfer data to new iPhone

You can transfer data to a new iPhone through three ways: 1-on-1, via an iCloud backup or using an encrypted backup via a Mac or computer. We have explained all these options step by step and can be found in the overview below.

  • 1-on-1 transferring immediately: by keeping your old and new iPhone close together you can wirelessly transfer all data without backup. This method of setting is recommended because apps are also transferred.
  • Transferring via iCloud where you make a recent iCloud backup and put it back on the new device, there is a chance that you will have to log in again in most apps.
  • Transferring via a Mac or PC by first making an encrypted backup and putting it back on the new iPhone via Finder or iTunes. These methods ensure that your apps, settings and personal data are transferred safely and complete.

While setting up a new iPhone, it is important that you keep your old iPhone at hand so that you can check whether all data is transferred correctly. Also wait to restore this iPhone until you are completely ready and have also completed the points below.

After transferring to a new iPhone

After transferring to a new iPhone, it is important to check whether all data is correctly synchronized and whether apps, especially with extra security such as banking and two -step verification, function properly. In addition, you must check whether Apple Pay, Digid and Esim are correctly activated and possibly reset for full operation. Also make sure that your old iPhone is still temporarily to hand until you know for sure that everything has been transferred satisfactorily.

DigiD and banking re -activate

For DigiD you usually have to re -asset your account with your existing login details or proof of identity. Sometimes you can use your old iPhone to complete the transfer. So make sure you are the first to do this on your new iPhone.

DigiD and banking re -activate

Banking apps from, among others, Revolut, Rabobank, ING or ABN AMRO are partly transferred to your new iPhone, but you will often have to activate these apps again by logging in again. The payment cards that you use in Apple Pay must also be added and verified via the relevant bank app or via the Settings of Apple Wallet.

Apps for two -step verification

If you use authenticator apps such as Authy, Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator, then you may have to activate this app again. With the help of these applications you can generate unique codes for two -factor authentication. In some cases you have to re -authenticate the apps with a new iPhone. If you use the iCloud key ring from Apple or 1Password, then this is usually not necessary.

Esim transfer

When switching to a new iPhone it is important to take your ESIM with you, because it contains your mobile subscription digitally. The ESIM settings are linked to your Apple account and can be transferred immediately to a new iPhone or afterwards.

iOS 16 can transfer Esim to other iPhone via Bluetooth

Once the number has been transferred to your new iPhone, the subscription is deactivated on your previous iPhone. If the installation of the new iPhone is complete, it is best to call a number via the ESIM number or check the mobile connection.

Check all apps

After transferring data to your new iPhone, it is wise to open and check all your apps one by one. If you don’t want this, do it for the most important applications. This way you immediately see whether you are logged in everywhere and whether all data, settings and content have been transferred properly. This prevents you from being faced with surprises later, for example when an app asks for extra verification or misses data, and gives you the certainty that everything on your new iPhone works properly.
