Police test BMW R 1300 RT-p for incident handling and surveillance

The police have started practical tests of the completely new BMW R 1300 RT-p, the successor to the well-known RT service motorcycle. Twelve units will be deployed nationally over the next two months to test the model under various conditions.

The new R 1300 RT-p has been specially developed for incident handling and surveillance and represents the next step in the close collaboration between BMW Motorrad, HSC Nieuw-Vennep and the Dutch police. The engine is based on the factory-produced government version of the R 1300 RT, but adapted by HSC to specific Dutch requirements and European procurement rules.

Further development of a proven formula

With the arrival of the R 1300 RT-p, BMW continues its tradition as a purveyor to the Dutch police. The development of this new model is a direct result of the tender awarded to BMW Group Netherlands in 2024 for the supply of the next generation of police service motorcycles.

The 1,300 cc boxer engine delivers 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm – figures that guarantee not only power, but also flexibility and control. The new wind and weather protection concept, with adjustable fairing parts, should offer officers optimal comfort during long shifts, both in busy city traffic and at high speed on the highway.

Customized Dutch police implementation

The RT-p differs from the standard R 1300 RT in several ways. The motorcycle is equipped with specific police electronics, integrated signal and communication systems, and adapted ergonomics for long-term use. The motorcycle must not only be powerful and agile, but also reliable in a variety of situations – from pursuits to escorts and daily traffic enforcement.

The two-month test phase is intended to gain practical experience with the new model. Motorcyclists from various police units will report their findings to BMW and HSC so that the final product can be refined.

“The user tests provide valuable input for ultimately delivering a robust, truly Dutch police version,” says Tom Crooijmans, head of BMW Motorrad Netherlands. “The test results will lead to any adjustments before the final version is adopted.”

Collaboration with HSC and dealer organization

The implementation of this project is the result of close collaboration between BMW Motorrad, HSC Nieuw-Vennep – specialist in government-specific vehicle modifications – and the Dutch BMW Motorrad dealer organization. Together they provide technical support, training and maintenance of the engines during the test period.

During this test phase, BMW Motorrad and HSC are ready to evaluate performance under various conditions. From high speeds to traffic jam guidance, and from urban stop-and-go situations to national emergency journeys – all facets of police work are discussed.

Trusted collaboration, updated technology

The introduction of the R 1300 RT-p marks a new chapter in a long-standing relationship: for decades, the Dutch police have chosen BMW as their permanent partner for motorcyclists in uniform. The RT series, known for its stability, comfort and reliability, has been the backbone of the police motorcycle fleet for years.

With this new generation, BMW wants to raise the bar again. Thanks to modern electronics, advanced safety systems and improved ergonomics, the R 1300 RT-p is designed to make police work safer, more efficient and more comfortable.

The results of the coming months will determine what the final production version will look like. This will be followed by large-scale delivery to the various police units in the Netherlands.

Or, as Crooijmans summarizes:

“This R 1300 RT-p is not just a motorcycle, but an essential tool for road safety – built in the Netherlands, for Dutch conditions.”
