MV Agusta reveals first details of radical five-cylinder

After the surprising unveiling at EICMA, MV Agusta has shared the first technical details of a completely new five-cylinder, an ultra-compact and lightweight engine block that will go into production within a few years for a returning top model.

MV Agusta reveals first details of radical five-cylinder

This all-new 5-cylinder “quadrato” platform represents the next step in performance and technological refinement, developed to serve a variety of segments – from supersport to naked and touring. The power source is now being fully developed in Schiranna.

The modularity is striking: the engine block has a cylinder capacity of 850 to 1150 cc, good for more than 240 hp at more than 16,000 rpm and a maximum of 135 Nm of torque at 8,500 rpm. Despite such figures, the new five-cylinder remains exceptionally compact and refined. The engine weighs less than 60 kilos and uses both an electric water pump and electric oil pump, which improves efficiency, temperature control and throttle response.

An important asset of this concept is the intrinsic character of a five-cylinder engine. Thanks to the specific firing order, the engine naturally delivers a wide, smooth torque curve and improved driveability, so variable valve timing is not necessary to achieve top performance both at the top and bottom.

According to MV, the unique crankshaft concept – a three-cylinder crankshaft at the front combined with a two-cylinder crankshaft at the rear in a U-configuration – also ensures an exceptionally refined running culture with minimal vibrations.

The layout provides another advantage: because the five-cylinder is narrower than a traditional inline four and shorter than a V4, it creates a new benchmark for compact high-performance engine architecture. MV Agusta positions the platform as a perfect basis for future sporty models with a distinct character.

The new five-cylinder makes its debut in a model that is currently no longer in the line-up, but will return in the coming years as one of the brand’s most ambitious projects. Fans of MV can therefore prepare for a special rebirth.
