The Palatinate emerged from the Thirty Years’ War as a battered and impoverished principality. Charles I Ludwig, the father of Elisabeth Charlotte (“Liselotte”), painstakingly rebuilt his legacy. The marriage of his daughter to Philippe of Orléans, the brother of the French King Louis XIV, was an important building block in this effort.
