Audi is warming up for E-tron GT

Audi shows a series of images of the upcoming E-tron GT, a fully electric newcomer that will be for sale in the Netherlands early next year.

Audi’s high-legged E-tron, presented in 2018, was the first in a series of fully electric models from Audi. Although all those EVs are carried under the E-tron label initially used for plug-in hybrids, no plug-in models are attached to the E-tron hook. Next year, Audi will expand its electric model family with the production versions of the Q4 e-tron and the Q4 Sportback e-tron. But there’s more! At the end of this year, Audi is already starting the production of the E-tron GT, which will go on sale in the Netherlands at the beginning of next year and of which Audi is now releasing a series of teaser photos.

Rewind to November 2018, when Audi pulled the curtain off the E-tron GT Concept during the Los Angeles Auto Show. That was a slick preview of a first ‘low’ E-tron. No SUV or crossover. The E-tron GT Concept was in fact a car in the style of the A7 Sportback. With a length of 4.96 meters, the concept car was only one millimeter as long as the A7 Sportback. A sturdy liftback. It was already known that the final production version would be quite similar to the study model, but Audi even seems to be taking the model into production almost one-to-one.

Audi puts a camouflage-printed E-tron GT in a dark studio. The shape of the study model is retained and almost every design element returns to the production version. In this way the black ‘mask’ remains intact and the light units survive the switch to the production version virtually unchanged. According to Audi, various parts of the coach are made of a combination of steel and aluminum. In addition, the brand from Ingolstadt already reports something about the mandatory acoustic signals that the car must be able to emit. The E-tron GT has one speaker for the sound system at the front as standard. Those who pay extra also get behind a loudspeaker. In the interior, a pair of speakers is responsible for an “emotional sound experience”.

Audi is still keeping extensive technical data under its cap, although the specifications of the E-tron Concept undoubtedly give a nice indication. The study model had a 90 kWh battery pack in its bottom, good for a WLTP range of about 400 kilometers. The electric motors mounted on the front and rear axles produced 590 hp. On paper, the study model thundered to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds. Its top speed: 240 km / h. The definitive E-tron GT does not share its technical basis, the J1 platform, with the E-tron and E-tron Sportback, but with the Porsche Taycan. It has now been confirmed that there will also be an RS version of the E-tron GT.

At the end of this year, the first units will roll off the line in Neckarsulm, Germany, right next to the R8 production line. The E-tron GT will go on sale early next year.
