‘Back-loading square’ opened in Lelystad

The first so-called vehicle-to-grid charging plaza in the Netherlands opened in Lelystad on Friday. Thanks to V2G technology, electric cars can not only be recharged there, but also supply power to an adjacent building.

The covered parking lot has ten V2G charging stations that can charge MyWheels electric shared cars with the power generated by ninety solar panels. Thanks to V2G technology, they can not only be recharged, but also supply power to the grid. In this case, the cars supply power to an adjacent building.

An energy management system can determine that, for example due to the loss of sunlight on the solar panels, the building needs power from the car batteries for a while. In that case, there is no more charging to the cars, but electricity is consumed. In a sense, the cars act as a buffer for peak or off-peak moments during power generation with solar panels.

The charging plaza in Lelystad was built as part of the Smart Charging Square Project, a program of the National Agenda for Charging Infrastructure, subsidized by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. The square was opened by Mijndomein Energie, part of hosting provider Mijndomein.
