Ram is developing a fully electric pick-up, confirms FCA CEO Mike Manley. The manufacturer will have to work hard not to miss the boat in a segment that is already becoming quite full.
While discussing FCA’s quarterly results, Manley confirmed in response to a question from an analyst that Ram is indeed developing an electric pick-up, reports Detroit Free Press. He does not make a concrete announcement, but does show that there is something in store. “There will be an electric pick-up from Ram on the market. Soon we will tell you exactly when that is,” said the CEO. Three months ago, while discussing the second quarter, he was even less specific: “Pickups are important to us. We don’t sit on the sidelines if we risk neglecting our market position going forward,” said Manley then.
The pick-up is still often the most profitable model for American car manufacturers. The Ford F-150, for example, is undisputedly the best-selling car States. Ford already has much more concrete plans for an EV pickup than Ram. Furthermore, General Motors has announced the GMC Hummer EV, Tesla is coming soon with the freak Cybertruck and there are a number of new players in this segment who have come up with promising product announcements: Rivian, Lordstown Motors and Nikola. So for Aries it is inevitable to follow this trend. FCA now seems to see the need for electrification. You may wonder whether the Ram 1500 TRX with its 6.2-liter, 711 hp supercharged V8 is so future-proof.
