Forum for Democracy party leader Thierry Baudet has explained the ‘car plans’ from his party’s election program in the Lower House. FvD wants to reverse the lowering of the maximum speed and invest in a few highway sections.
In mid-March, the maximum speed on motorways in the Netherlands was set to 100 km / h during the day everywhere. Only between 7 pm and 6 am it is allowed to drive even faster on some routes. The Forum for Democracy is a thorn in the side. Thierry Baudet explained in a debate in the House of Representatives what vision his party has on this and shared a number of program points in the field of mobility. The most important point, according to him, is to reverse the speed reduction, because according to him the reason behind this is not relevant.
“It has now been calculated that the ‘nitrogen gain’ by setting a maximum speed of 100 km / h is completely and completely negligible”, argues the politician. Baudet calls it a ‘joke measure’, which he says was introduced after it turned out to be ‘completely pointless’. Forum for Democracy therefore wants to return to a maximum speed of 130 km / h, always and everywhere where possible. According to him, it is also allowed to exceed 130 km / h and in the election program FvD even speaks of a ‘maximum speed according to the German model’. Unlimited speed on some routes therefore seems to be an option for the party.
According to the party leader, a ‘more credible maximum speed’ set on the basis of the layout of the road would lead to fewer speed limits and a better traffic flow. There would also be less speed difference between different cars and therefore safer. Baudet relies in these statements on studies that he believes have pointed this out.
Highways and tolls
Baudet also insisted that the Netherlands should invest money in better accessibility. The construction of the A8 and A9 for traffic in the Zaanstreek and IJmond region must be accelerated, according to FvD. In addition, the party wants the N35 between Zwolle and Enschede to become a motorway. Now only the route Wierden-Enschede is highway A35. FvD also wants the Westerscheldetunnel to be toll-free. According to Baudet, this would ‘offer enormous opportunities for Zeeland’.
