Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made it clear that a compact hatchback, especially for the European market, is being seriously considered.
Last summer, Musk hinted that there may be two new Tesla models in the pipeline. We are not talking about the Cybertruck or the Roadster, but two completely unknown newcomers. One of these would be a compact model under the Model 3. At the time, it was mainly linked to the Chinese market, but Musk is now a bit more concrete. He mainly aims at the European market: “In Europe it is probably sensible to go for a compact car. A hatchback or something similar. In the US cars are a bit bigger, that’s personal taste there. In Europe they are smaller. “, signs Reuters on. Musk says he has recently experienced that European cities require smaller transport. That apparently made him think even more. “I was driving a Model X through Berlin and it was quite difficult to find a parking space that we could fit into.”
The Model 3 is of course already of proportions that can be used in Europe, but Musk still seems to be growing interest in a smaller model. There is a chance that the opening of the Gigafactory near Berlin will accelerate any plans for this. Tesla would of course also be able to build a specific European-focused model locally. Initially, Tesla will mainly build Model Ys in Germany. With its target annual production capacity of 500,000 cars, the factory appears large enough for one more model.
