The next Mazda 2 will be based on the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, Mazda reports in a presentation of its latest quarterly report. Mazda is thus intensifying its cooperation with Toyota. The new Mazda 2 is scheduled for sometime in the next two years. It is not yet known exactly when he will arrive.
Mazda reports that it plans to offer an ‘OEM-supplied model based on Yaris THS’ for the European market between now and 2022. Given that the current Mazda 2 has been around since 2014, it seems that the successor to the Mazda 2 will share its genes to a large extent with those of the Yaris. How far that will go remains to be seen. In any case, it is obvious that the new Mazda 2 will get the 116 hp 1.5 Hybrid under the hood. It may be that Mazda is still preparing its own design, but it is also quite possible that it will take a similar path to Suzuki with the Swace and Across, which are a rebadged Corolla and RAV4 respectively.
With a hybrid powered 2, Mazda can further reduce its average CO2 emissions in Europe. That would also be beneficial for Toyota, because the two brands are together in a CO2 pool. Furthermore, Toyota has been a five percent shareholder in Mazda since 2017. They have previously collaborated in the B segment, but the other way around: the North American Toyota Yaris was a Mazda 2 with Toyota badges, which also came as a sedan. In addition, there was also a hybrid variant of the previous Mazda 3 with a Toyota powertrain, but it did not come to Europe.
It is therefore not yet known when the new Mazda 2 will make its appearance. Mazda Netherlands did not want to say anything about this to Techzle.
