‘Electric driving costs almost the same as petrol’

An electric car is hardly more expensive to use than a model with a fuel engine, according to the Thursday presented Electric Driving Monitor 2020 of the ANWB.

The association comes to an amount of 57 cents per kilometer for an electric model compared to 56.4 cents for a fuel car. The ANWB made the calculation based on a usage period of four years and 15,000 kilometers driven per year. The purchase subsidy from the government is not included.

Electric driving is cheaper than driving on petrol once the car is in use, because of the MRB exemption and relatively low costs per kilometer. In terms of purchase, however, electric cars are on average still more expensive than their more conventionally powered equivalents. Hence, it only approaches the total cost of a petrol car over a longer period of time. The average purchase price of a fully electric car this year stands at € 36,000, although this is mainly due to the relatively large number of models in the more expensive segment and because there is still some catching up to do at the lower end of the market.

The same ANWB study also showed that electric driving is rapidly gaining popularity in the Netherlands. However, there are still stumbling blocks for a significant proportion of those surveyed.
