The light therapy glasses from the Dutch company Propeaq look like quite futuristic sunglasses with blue lenses. There are small lights above the glasses that emit blue light that falls on your eyes. It feels a bit strange when you set it up for the first time, but you get used to it quickly – especially since you can continue with what you were doing, without your surroundings suddenly looking blue.
Purposes
You can use the glasses for different purposes: from sleeping better to reducing jet lag. In the manual and on www.propeaq.com is clearly explained how to use the glasses for each purpose. If you want to use it to sleep better, you can wear it in the morning with blue light, while in the evening you put in the supplied orange lenses, so that blue ambient light is filtered.
In the dark corona home working days, I go for the schedule that goes with more energy. I have to wear the glasses for half an hour every day during the day.
App
There is also a special app for those who often have to fly or who work in shifts. You fill in some data, after which the app concludes whether you are a morning or an evening person. When you enter your flight details or your working hours, you will receive recommendations when to put on the glasses and for how long.
In practice
After charging the glasses via USB, I put them on for the first time and set a timer. But that’s not necessary: the glasses turn themselves off after 30 minutes, the recommended wearing time. It’s comfortable and I don’t feel bothered by it. It is a pity that it doesn’t fit over my reading glasses – this could be the perfect half hour to sit on the couch with a book. Instead, I’m going for a walk. I take the looks of passers-by (because yes, it looks strange) for granted.
Habit
After a few days it has become a habit: just put on your glasses. It is important to do this when there is (still) sufficient ambient light. When it gets dark, the glasses on the inside start to mirror a bit and you see your own eyes. So the next day I put it on an hour earlier. It is very nice that it switches itself off: I regularly forget that I have it on, because it is so light. You don’t need to charge it often: the manual mentions two hours of battery life, but after two and a half hours of use, the glasses are not yet empty.
Amazon Launchpad
The glasses are available via Amazon Launchpad, a platform where start-ups and small entrepreneurs can offer their innovative products to a large audience.
Conclusion
The pressing question is of course: does it work? I have to admit, I was skeptical, but after wearing the glasses every afternoon for ten days in a row, I do feel less tired and a bit more energized. The fact that you can continue what you are doing, and not have to sit in front of a daylight lamp stationary, is a plus. The glasses are not cheap, but they certainly seem effective.
