McLaren sells a large share of McLaren Racing

McLaren has sold a third of the shares in McLaren Racing to the American investment company MSP Sports Capital, the British company announced in a statement. Thanks to the financial injection from MSP, McLaren can make more money available for the development of new supercars in the coming years.

In exchange for its investment of more than € 204 million, MSP will receive 33 percent of the shares of McLaren Racing, which participates in Formula 1 and IndyCar, among others. This investment will provide the McLaren motorsport division with funding for the next few years, so that the company’s remaining finances can be fully used to develop and build new supercars. McLaren is not exactly broad: the supercar builder was hit hard by the corona crisis, forcing the company to take various measures to get money. One of these was the so-called ‘sale-and-leaseback’ of the Woking headquarters, where McLaren sold its property to an outside party and then rents it again.

Despite the hard blow that has taken McLaren, people are optimistic about the future. Chairman of the Board Paul Walsh said, among other things Automotive News that demand is currently reviving in Asia and that he expects this trend to continue to Europe and America. McLaren also has a number of interesting projects in the pipeline. The brand will soon announce a completely new hybrid model that will replace the Sport Series, which currently consists of various models: the Artura. McLaren will then launch the successor to the P1 in the Ultimate Series around 2025. All new McLaren models will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain. By the end of this decade, the sports car brand must also have launched a fully electric supercar.
