Audi sends employees on leave due to shortages

Audi joins the fast-growing list of car manufacturers that are forced to reduce production due to parts shortages. The brand sends more than 10,000 employees on leave.

A big blow for Audi: it is forced to send ‘more than 10,000’ employees temporarily on leave due to a parts shortage. Due to the shortage, the production of cars is slowing down and that is why there is not enough to do for part of the workforce. CEO Markus Duesmann explains this course of events in conversation with the Financial Times. According to him, this is a declining supply of semiconductors.

According to Duesmann, Audi is doing everything it can to ensure that the number of ‘missed’ cars does not exceed 10,000 this quarter. This shortage affects the production of the A4 and A5 at the factories in Neckarsulm and Ingolstadt. It is hoped to return to full power by January 29.

The situation is comparable to that of Mercedes-Benz, which reduced production for a similar reason. After all, that also related to a shortage of semiconductors. Ford is also struggling with a shortage of it in the US and even has to shut down production in Germany for a full month due to a shortage of microchips. Volkswagen expects to lose up to 100,000 cars in production this year for similar reasons.
