Toyota Mirai – Back to Basics

With the new Toyota Mirai, driving on hydrogen should become a bit more accessible to a wider audience. This mainly translates into a considerably lower starting price compared to the previous model: the price difference amounts to no less than € 15,100! Do you still get an attractive car for that money?

€ 65,995

Thanks to the lower purchase price of the second generation Toyota Mirai, it may suddenly be a lot more attractive for some to switch to hydrogen. This is partly because the addition regime is favorable to the hydrogen car: this year you add 12 percent over the entire fiscal value of the car. With an EV on batteries, that addition benefit only applies to € 40,000, on the remaining amount you have to add the full amount of 22 percent. On the other hand, the hydrogen infrastructure is still very limited. It is also questionable whether hydrogen has a future for passenger cars, now that the other manufacturers are investing en masse on the development of BEVs.

If you want to know more about this, you should definitely watch the video of Roy Kleijwegt, because today it is all about price and equipment. In any case, you do not have to think long about the choice of the powertrain in the Mirai, because there is only one: the electric motor with 182 hp. Unlike the previous model, this power source now drives the rear wheels. The promised range is 650 kilometers. Other than that, the performance is not very spectacular. The Mirai accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 9 seconds and the top speed is 175 km / h.

Streamlined

In terms of appearance, the Mirai could hardly have been more different from the previous model, which stood out for its rather extravagant lines. The second generation of the Mirai looks a lot more streamlined, thanks in part to the extended hood and roofline. Fortunately, the basic version of the Mirai does not make a lot of concessions to that appearance. LED headlights and taillights are standard, as are 19-inch alloy wheels. There is a chrome edge at the bottom of the grille and the lower window frame also shines towards you at the side windows. The Mirai is in principle painted in the shown color Pacific Blue metallic, for the other six colors you have to pay € 1,295.

The Mirai’s exterior mirrors are always electrically foldable and heated and you no longer have to pay extra for Smart Entry. To make parking easier with the nearly five-meter-long sedan, a reversing camera is fitted as standard. Front and rear parking sensors are only available from the more expensive Executive trim level, but more about that later. You also have to be at the more expensive equipment levels for other wheels. The Executive gets the same 19-inchers as the Dynamic, but with a different color. The most expensive Prestige trim level features 20-inch multi-spoke wheels.

Black dust

There are therefore not many personalization options for the exterior on the Mirai Dynamic, for that you have to be at the more expensive equipment levels. The same also applies to the interior, because it is black fabric that strikes the clock there in the entry-level version. There are no other options for the color of the upholstery and the moldings cannot be filled in according to your own taste. That does not mean that it is a meager affair in the Mirai. The driver’s seat is always electrically adjustable and seat heating is also included. Steering wheel heating is also standard. The dashboard features an 8-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with compatibility for DAB +, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you are immediately prepared for that.

Things like separate climate control with two zones, a light and rain sensor and an automatic interior mirror are also included. Nice for music lovers is JBL Premium Audio with 14 speakers, for which you also do not have to transfer anything extra to Toyota. In terms of safety systems, the Mirai is right from the start with Adaptive Cruise Control, traffic sign recognition, Pre-collision System and Lane Departure Alert and a high beam assistant. All that remains to be desired in that area is the Blind Spot Monitor, a function included with the Executive.

In terms of options, Toyota offers nothing on the Mirai Dynamic. With the above equipment you should in principle do it, or you should go for the more expensive trim levels Executive (€ 69,495) or Prestige (€ 76,495). The Executive offers parking sensors front and rear, more extensive LED lighting, synthetic leather seats and an electrically adjustable steering wheel. The Prestige also adds a panoramic roof, a 10-inch head-up display, seat heating and ventilation for both the front and rear seats and a parking assistant. So for a generous 10 mille extra you are fully equipped.

Refueling service

By the way, Toyota will initially also offer the Mirai as a Launch Edition. This is basically the same as the Prestige, but with the Toyota Tank service included. The latter means that Toyota refuel your Mirai for you at a hydrogen station when you are within 50 kilometers of such a gas station, so that you do not have to drive there yourself. Convenience serves people, although Mirai drivers hope that the hydrogen infrastructure will be expanded in the short term.
