4 innovations in the Overcast podcast app update

One of the finest podcast apps for iOS has been updated. Especially the design of Overcast has undergone the necessary changes in the third version.

Overcast update

Overcast has made updates that give the podcast app more functions and a new design that better matches iOS 10. The app is now free to download, you can read what’s new below.

1. The player

The Overcast player, the screen you see when you listen to a podcast, is now shown as a map. You slide this from bottom to top and vice versa, with which it will lie over the background. The window no longer fills the entire screen, but looks like the playback screen in Apple Music.

By swiping left and right over the player, you get to the menu (where you adjust the speed, for example) and to the attached text of the podcast makers. If you want to read the episode text before you start playing, it will appear from the menu (via the i-sign) in a nice new full screen and no longer via a popup.

The player is shown slightly larger on the screen when it is collapsed (bottom of the screen) than in the previous version of the app.

2. Play

Previously, an episode immediately started playing when you tapped it. That is no longer the case. If you now select one, a menu will expand underneath. Here you can choose play, but it also offers the possibility to share the podcast, mark it as a favorite, delete it or add it to a playlist. This extra step prevents you from accidentally turning on a podcast. Previously, you only got more menu options if you swiped left on the episode.

3. Playlists

Marco Arment, the creator of Overcast, has made it easier for users to customize playlists. You can always slide episodes up and down in version 3 to arrange their order. In addition, it is now easier to add episodes from multiple places within the app.

4. Smaller changes

It is finally possible to sort episodes from old to new. In addition, already heard podcasts are blurred between the recommendations.

Overcast now also has a widget, with which you can immediately see which podcasts are playing next. The Apple Watch app has also been improved, making it run faster on the most recent version of watchOS.
