Canceling App Store subscriptions just got easier: that’s how it works

Do you pay for Apple Music monthly, but never actually listen? Waste of your money. This is how you cancel subscriptions on your Mac and iPhone.

Cancel App Store and iTunes subscriptions

More and more apps offer subscriptions. This means you do not have to put the amount on the table in one go, but you pay per week, month or year. The advantage of this is that you no longer have to purchase individual albums and songs in iTunes, for example.

On the other hand, all subscriptions can be quite expensive. When the expiration date is approaching, and it is therefore time to renew or stop, Apple will send you an email. Now is a good time to take a critical look at your subscriptions and potentially save money. You can cancel a subscription in two ways: via an iOS device or via the computer.

Cancel App Store subscriptions on iOS

  1. Update to iOS 12.1.4 and open the App Store;
  2. Tap your profile picture at the top right of the screen;
  3. Choose ‘Manage subscriptions’;
  4. You can now tap on a subscription and renew or cancel it;
  5. Tap the red button to cancel the subscription. You can use the service up to the stated expiry date.

With iOS 12.1.4, Apple makes it easier to cancel subscriptions. Where you previously had to dive deep into the settings menu, you can now cancel expensive subscriptions in a few taps.

Cancel subscriptions with iTunes

  1. Open iTunes and log in with your Apple ID;
  2. In the Account window, select ‘View my account;
  3. Scroll down until you arrive at ‘Settings’;
  4. Click here next to ‘Subscriptions’ for ‘Management’;
  5. Enter your password (Apple will ask for it again for security);
  6. Click on ‘Change’ on the subscription of your choice;
  7. Then choose to extend your subscription or to cancel it completely;
  8. When you’re done, tap Done.

Are you missing a subscription? Then you may not pay this via the App Store or iTunes, but directly to the developer of the program. For example, you can only pay for Netflix in this way.

Apple makes money from every payment that goes through its platforms, which is of course a thorn in the side of app developers. They therefore prefer that you transfer money directly.
