Podcasts can take a long time. There is nothing wrong with that, but the shows do take up a lot of storage space. This ensures that Apple Podcasts no longer automatically downloads new episodes on your iPhone or iPad.
Turn off auto-download podcasts
The podcast is back and after iOS the sound files with macOS Catalina will also get their own app. Those who have subscribed to multiple shows will notice after a while that the episodes follow each other at a rapid pace. In addition, podcasts require a lot of storage space, especially when new episodes download automatically in the background.
iPhones with limited storage capacity fill up so quickly. Fortunately, you can do something about this. To turn off automatic podcast download:
- Open the Settings on your iPhone or iPad;
- Go to ‘Podcasts’ and choose ‘Download episodes’
- Select ‘Off’.
In the same menu you can also choose to download all unplayed podcasts. All episodes that you have not yet listened to are downloaded at once. This is useful, for example, when you have joined a show later and want to listen to previous seasons in succession.

Spotify and podcasts
Do you mainly listen to podcasts via Spotify? Then there is nothing else to do than download new episodes manually. There is no option to download shows automatically. Hopefully this will change soon, because with the takeover of Gimlet Media and Anchor, the Swedish streaming service seems to be increasingly focusing on podcasts.
