Are you taking your smart watch with you on vacation to the pool or the sea? Here’s everything you need to know about swimming with an Apple Watch.
Swimming with Apple Watch: everything you need to know
Of course you take your Apple Watch with you on vacation. When you’re at the pool and fancy a dip, you probably don’t have to take the watch off. In this article you can read everything about swimming with an Apple Watch.
1. Can I swim with an Apple Watch?
Swimming laps with your Apple Watch is no problem at all. That is, if you wear at least a Series 2 on your wrist. However, the Series 1 and original Apple Watch are only water resistant, but not waterproof.
This means that these watches can withstand a drop of water when cleaning, but should not be submerged. Swimming (or showering) with an Apple Watch Series 2, 3 and 4, on the other hand, is no problem at all. It does not matter whether you swim laps in the pool, or float in a lake or the sea.
2. Start a swimming workout
The Apple Watch is an ideal companion during exercise, even when you go swimming. You can start a swimming workout to measure your results. You do this like this:
- Open the Workout app and scroll to ‘Swimming pool’ or ‘Open water’;
- Start the workout, or press the three dots first to set a calorie, distance, or time goal;
- Are you going to swim laps in a swimming pool? Then turn the Digital Crown to set the pool length so that the Apple Watch can count the number of laps.
Once the swim workout starts, the screen locks to prevent accidental taps from water droplets. If you want to view your stats while swimming laps, press the Digital Crown and side button at the same time to pause the workout. Do the same to resume the activity.

3. After the fresh dive
During the swim workout you will see a droplet at the top of the screen. This means that the display is locked. As soon as you have finished swimming, it is therefore important to remove any water from the Apple Watch. Dry the screen and turn the Digital Crown to unlock the screen. This may release water from the speakers.
4. Apple Watch water resistance decreases
The water resistance of an Apple Watch decreases over time. This is the case with most water-resistant devices. Unfortunately, you cannot check how water-resistant your watch is at the moment.
You can, however, ensure that the water resistance is maintained as much as possible. Be careful not to drop the watch, expose it to soap, perfume, solvents, and things like sunscreen or lotion. It is also better not to wear the watch in a steam room.
