This app helps against double keystrokes on MacBook keyboard

Do you have a MacBook with a butterfly keyboard? Then you can run into double attacks. Unshaky offers a solution.

Unshaky: against double attacks on Macbook

Apple has been flitting when it comes to its keyboards lately. A special design is used in the various MacBooks so that laptops can be extra thin, but also break easily. A small piece of dirt, such as a crumb or dust, can already throw a spanner in the works.

Although the company states that only a few users will experience this problem, it is still a common complaint. Months old MacBooks can also suddenly have problems. If you have to type a lot, that is almost impossible with this problem. A single key or several keys are then regularly hit twice. Sometimes immediately after each other and sometimes later in a word. As a result, you have to go back every time to edit your text.

Apple has a repair program set up for MacBooks with this butterfly keyboard. For that you have to go to a shop to repair the device. You will also probably lose your laptop for a few days and it can happen again a while later.

Make sure to use this option, but if you need an immediate solution, we will help you with that.

Options

Although macOS gives you limited options to change your keyboard settings, the Unshaky app offers more options. With this app, lightning-fast registrations of the same button are automatically blocked. In the app you indicate how quickly the attacks can be in succession.

It’s a somewhat unorthodox solution for Apple users, but we can say from our own experience that it works. In a month, Unshaky ignored 700 attacks on me, without being bothered by them.

The app is shared via GitHub. The full code can be viewed there, so there are no sneaky back doors in the app. This means, for example, that your keyboard presses are not registered and no one can see them. All your information remains private.

Install Unshaky

To install Unshaky, download the app here, drag it to the Apps folder and follow the further instructions.

For the app to work, you still need to change a setting in the app. Open Unshaky and click on ‘Settings’. Make sure that the language of your keyboard is set correctly and choose a delay. This delay represents the number of milliseconds from one keystroke to another. 40ms worked well for me, but you can experiment with that a bit. It is also possible to set this setting separately for each key.

In addition, it is useful to have Unshaky start up immediately when starting the MacBook. To do this, go to ‘System Preferences> Users and Groups’ and choose the heading ‘Log in’ under your name. There you add Unshaky with the plus sign as one of your startup programs.
