Watching Disney Plus together: that’s how GroupWatch works

With Disney Plus GroupWatch you can watch The Mandalorian together with family and friends, without having to visit each other. This is how you organize a digital movie night with Disney Plus.

Disney Plus GroupWatch: this is how you watch remotely together

The idea behind GroupWatch is simple: watch the same movie or series together with friends and / or family, without having to visit each other. Instead, everyone watches safely from their own screen. Here’s how to get Disney Plus GroupWatch running:

  1. To start

    Open the Disney Plus app on your iPhone / iPad, or log in via the browser on your computer, for example;

  2. What are we going to watch?

    Select the documentary, film or series that you want to watch with the group and then press the icon with three figures in it. It should be next to the plus and download buttons;

  3. To invite

    Tap ‘Invite’ twice and then share the link with the people you want to add to GroupWatch, for example via WhatsApp;

  4. Just wait and watch

    Is everyone in the group? Then tap ‘Start streaming’ after which you can start watching.

The documentary, film or series is then streamed synchronously, so you all see the same thing. Is someone pressing the pause button? Then everyone’s image stops. The same thing happens when someone is rewinding or fast forwarding.

The audio also runs – if all goes well – the same. Is this not the case? Then try to restart the group. Also check your internet settings. Watching a movie together is tough on your connection, so make sure you have stable internet.

You can send emoji to each other in Disney Plus GroupWatch, but not chat. That way you can let us know what you think of a certain scene, but you have to keep the details for WhatsApp (or when you see each other again in real life).

The conditions

Disney Plus GroupWatch works with up to seven people at the same time. So you can watch the same documentary, film or series with six others. Are viewers using the same Disney Plus account? Then up to four profiles of that account can watch GroupWatch at the same time. This is the case, for example, when your household has one account on the streaming service and you watch together with three roommates.

Not Disney Plus, but Netflix?

Disney Plus isn’t the only way to watch the same movie together remotely. The best-known alternative is probably Netflix Party, a plug-in for Google’s popular Chrome browser. Just like with Disney Plus GroupWatch, you can watch the same thing with friends, but on Netflix. In the video below, we explain how to get Netflix Party working.
