Americans will soon be able to get behind the wheel of a new Citroën in their own country. It is a – quite literally – small re-introduction of the brand in the US.
The French now have ties with the US not only because of their new sister brands to the former FCA, but also because of Free2Move. This is a car-sharing service that came under the former Groupe PSA and now under Stellantis. Free2Move offers numerous cars from different groups for its services and now one is added: the Citroën Ami. Free2Move announces that on LinkedIn, at least, it shows a teaser of a car that is unmistakably an Ami.
Residents of Washington DC will soon be able to rent the Ami and with that, Citroën – especially since Free2Move is part of Stellantis – is officially back in the US for the first time in almost fifty years. The brand took off in the seventies and sister brand Peugeot followed in the early nineties. Chances are, however, that it won’t be much more than this for Citroën (and Peugeot) in the US. Earlier this year, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares indicated that selling Peugeots in the US is not planned. That almost certainly also applies to Citroën. After all, Stellantis says that for the American market it will put its money into its American brands; Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge and Ram.
Citroen Ami
It will be interesting to observe how the Americans receive the Ami. With its 2.41 meters in length and 1.52 meters, the electrically powered city car is miniscule even by European standards. In addition, it is also nice and simple on the inside and you can not go faster than 45 km / h. Of course he will have to prove his added value in Washington in the busiest parts of the city, with limited parking options. In any case, the Ami contrasts sharply with the car with which Citroën used to garner some admiration in the US: the DS.
