Your tax return must be submitted before 1 April. A handy way to arrange this is with the Declaration 2017 app, which can be downloaded for your iPhone.
Tax return 2017 app: for when nothing has changed
You can file a tax return in various ways. If nothing has changed in your economic situation in the past year, the Tax Return 2017 app from the Tax Authorities is the most convenient option. By logging in with DigiD, all your details are automatically pre-filled, which you only have to check and confirm. At the end of the tax return you will see how much you have to pay, or how much you will get back. When you start the app, you add an extra security step to the app by creating a pin code.
However, the app does not always provide a solution. The most limiting factor is probably whether you are an entrepreneur or not. Is this the case? Then you cannot use the app. In these situations you cannot use the Declaration 2017 app for your tax return:
- When you have bought or sold a home;
- Had a residual debt for a former owner-occupied home;
- Did not have the same tax partner throughout the year;
- Had income from other activities;
- Lived abroad;
- Income from or had assets abroad;
- Was a co-parent and your minor child was not registered at your address;
- Want to declare deductible items, such as healthcare costs, donations, or study costs.
If one of these situations applies to you, you must file a declaration using the old-fashioned forms or online. This makes the app a particularly useful tool, but it is by no means a replacement. It has been possible to file a declaration with your iPhone and iPad since 2014, when the Declaration 2013 app appeared.
No innovations this year
Last year, the first major update was added, namely the implementation of Touch ID. Logging in with the tip of your finger is still possible, on the iPhone X you can also confirm your identity with Face ID.
