Porsche is setting up a joint venture with battery manufacturer Customcells that will produce new ‘high performance’ batteries. Porsche does not say how much it will invest in the joint venture, but does report that the amount is at least ‘two figures’.
Porsche and Customcells are building a partnership that goes by the name Cellforce Group GmbH. Cellforce is a brand new joint venture in which Porsche ultimately owns almost 84 percent of the shares.
Cellforce will produce special high-performance batteries, according to the car manufacturer from Stuttgart. The company aims to build at least 1,000 such packages annually. The new batteries have a silicon anode and a higher energy density and less internal resistance than conventional ones. That means: packages with more kWh’s, or smaller packages with the same capacity as the current larger ones. The batteries to be produced must also be able to withstand higher temperatures. Cellforce is based in Tübingen, Germany and currently has 13 employees on its payroll. By 2025 there should be 80.
