Connectivity
Not surprisingly, you connect via bluetooth. You can put the left and right earphones on or off separately and connect them via Bluetooth. Sometimes this means that when you take the earbuds out of the box, only one is connected to your device. To connect the earpiece that is off, you need to briefly switch the earpiece in question on and off. After that, the connection is restored. You can remember up to three devices at the same time. The in-ears switch seamlessly to another device. Provided that the device has already been set up once, of course.
The Yamaha TW-E3A features aptX support. This codec ensures that the streaming quality (via Bluetooth) of your music is slightly higher than with earphones that do not have aptX support. However, the device you use as a music source must also offer that aptX support.
Control and app
Touch operation is done through the earplugs. We see this with most in-ears that come out these days. By pressing the left or right earbud once or twice you can skip to the next track, pause the music or increase the volume. Each earpiece and push command has a unique task associated with it. You can also receive, end and even ignore phone calls via the earphones.
There is also an application with the ears. You can do very little with this. You can only enable the Listening Care option there. There is no equalizer to, for example, increase or decrease the bass. Enabling this mode does improve the sound quality, however. With this option enabled, the earphones sound good even at low volume.
These Yamaha earphones also have voice control.
wearing comfort
The ears are very good. The ears have a small compact design, but close the ears well. The packaging also contains several eartips to find the perfect fit for you. Some earphones, such as the Apple AirPods Pro, have a very long handle. To me, that’s an ugly sight. The TW-E3A looks a lot better in that regard. A nice touch is the IPX5 rating. This means that the earphones are water resistant. So you don’t have to be afraid of rain or sweat drops.
Sound
These Yamaha earphones sound remarkably good. The in-ears can reproduce a fairly complete sound palette. There is more than enough bass and the sound is pleasant even at a low volume. The microphone sometimes does not always pick up everything well and can be found a bit soft when making a call. Both via video calling software and Microsoft Teams and Discord, but also during regular telephone calls. The TW-E3A does not support noise cancellation and lacks something like an ambient mode.
Conclusion
The TW-E3A in-ears from Yamaha sound great (surprisingly good even for this price range), last a long time, are water resistant and also sit well. But that’s about all there is to say. The earphones are not distinguished by good noise reduction or a handy app with added value. Nevertheless, these are excellent earphones in this price range. Good alternatives are the 1More Colorbuds and the Teufel Airy Sports. The earphones from 1More offer approximately the same specs in a different jacket, while the earphones from Teufel are slightly more suitable for athletes.
