DiskGenius – From partition management to data recovery

Clean partition

There are tools for managing partitions and there are for recovering lost data. DiskGenius unites both functions in one interface. That is quite ambitious and with this the program mainly targets the more advanced user.

  • Pros
  • Many partition management functions
  • Negatives
  • Busy (and not such a slick) interface
  • Some limitations (especially towards data recovery)

DiskGenius is of Chinese origin and there are three editions, two of which are paid versions (from around 84 euros). The free version has some limitations, of course. On the website you will find a detailed comparison, but the main limitation of the free variant is mainly in the data recovery: that allows you to recover only small files.

Partition management

When you boot DiskGenius, you will get a list of all disks and their partitions. You also get a lot of detailed information such as the S.M.A.R.T status of your disks, the cluster size and number of sectors of your partitions and so on. From dynamic context menus you get access to all management options and there are quite a few. For example, you can backup partition tables, or clone disks and partitions, and also restore them. Other classic operations include moving, scaling, deleting, formatting and splitting partitions.

There are also lesser known functions, such as creating various partitions in one movement where you determine the size and file system yourself. Most functions are quite user-friendly.

We can imagine that the numerous functions scare a beginner somewhat.

Data recovery

If you select a partition, you can also view the content at the file level, which offers data recovery perspectives. With the push of a button you instruct DiskGenius to search for lost (presumed) data, while you indicate in which file types you are interested. Such a scan can be interrupted at any time, after which you can immediately restore the data found.

It is also handy that you can turn DiskGenius into a live USB stick with just a few mouse clicks. If Windows ever gives up, you can still try partition or data recovery this way.

Conclusion

DiskGenius is a flexible partition manager and data recovery company. As soon as you get a view of the busy interface and the numerous options of the context menus, you can also perform a nice number of advanced disk and data (recovery) operations.
