How to install Dropbox on Mac

Dropbox is a so-called cloud service. Users can store files in the cloud and use them on different devices. To use Dropbox, you need an internet connection and a (free) Dropbox account. Don’t have an account yet? Then create an account during the installation of the program.

  • Click on the above blue button To download.
  • The Dropbox website opens. click on Download Dropbox.
  • Click the button with a circle and an arrow at the top right of the browser.How to install Dropbox on Mac
  • Double click on the file Dropboxinstaller.dmg.
  • The ‘Dropbox Installer’ window appears. Double-click the Dropbox icon.
  • The question appears whether you are sure you want to open the program. Click in this notification Open.

The installation will start. That takes a few minutes. Once the installation is complete, a window will open and you can log in or register a new account. We discuss both options below.

Dropbox may want to control access to the computer first. If the “Security & Privacy” window appears, follow the steps in “Access on Mac” below.

If you already have an account, you do not need to create one and can log in directly:

  • In the window, click E-mail and type the email address associated with your Dropbox account.
  • click on password and type the corresponding password.
  • click on To register.
  • click on Next one.
  • Choose how you want to use Dropbox, paid or free. click on Create files locally to use Dropbox for free. You get 2 GB of storage for free. That’s not enough to back up the entire computer, but it’s enough for some important files. click on Continue with Basic to confirm.
  • A list of folders that are synchronized by default will appear on the screen. Uncheck the folders that do not need to be stored in Dropbox. click on Next one.
  • Dropbox is now trying to sell you a paid service. click on Keep using Basic > Yes, continue.
  • If the computer notifies you about accessing certain items, for example Desktop or Finder, click OK.
  • The first backup has been created. click on Next one.
  • click on To Dropbox.

The Dropbox folder in the Finder opens. If this doesn’t happen, follow the steps in the ‘Access Dropbox’ section.

Don’t have an account yet? Creating an account works as follows:

  • click on Register.
  • Type your full name.
  • click on E-mail and type your email address.
  • Make up a password, tap password and enter the created password.
  • Put a tick in front of I agree to the terms and conditions.
  • click on Register.
  • click on Next one.
  • Choose how you want to use Dropbox, paid or free. click on Create files locally to use Dropbox for free. You get 2 GB of storage for free. That’s not enough to back up the entire computer, but it’s enough for some important files. click on Continue with Basic to confirm.
  • A list of folders that are synchronized by default will appear on the screen. Uncheck the folders that do not need to be stored in Dropbox. click on Next one.
  • click on Continue with Dropbox Basic > Yes for sure.
  • If the computer notifies you about accessing certain items, for example Desktop or Finder, click OK.
  • click on Next one.
  • click on To Dropbox.

The Dropbox folder in the Finder opens. If this doesn’t happen, follow the steps in the ‘Access Dropbox’ section.

If the Dropbox folder doesn’t open immediately after logging in or creating an account, you still need to give Dropbox access to the computer. If the ‘Security and privacy’ window appears by itself, you can skip the first three points below.

  • Click on the Apple logo in the menu > System Preferences.
  • click on Security and Privacy.
  • Scroll down in the left pane and click Accessibility.
  • Click on the padlock at the bottom left.
  • Type the password of the Mac user account and click Unlock.
  • Put a tick in front of Dropbox (click on the white square in front of it).
  • Click on the padlock again.
  • Close the window.

If necessary, open Dropbox via finder > apps > double click on Dropbox.

The Dropbox program is on the Mac and you are logged in. It’s time to get started.
