Traffic jam as usual: ‘Have we learned nothing?’

Last week ‘old’ times revived on the road when it comes to traffic congestion. What the Mobility Alliance warned about, seems to be becoming reality: we are falling into old habits.

It was very busy on the road last week. The first week since the relaxed home work advice immediately resulted in the busiest strikers in over a year and a half. Back to pre-coronavirus levels. There was still a visible difference: the crowds are more spread over the day. Nevertheless, the Mobility Alliance is watching with concern what is happening. What it recently warned about seems to be coming true. “Despite all the warnings, it seems as if we have learned nothing from the corona crisis,” said Steven van Eijck, chairman of the Mobility Alliance.

“We see that people are moving more now that society is increasingly reopened. We have been insisting for some time on the importance of more flexibility by better spreading passenger flows: spreading the time and spreading the means of transport,” emphasizes the chairman. According to the Mobility Alliance, it is essential that more concrete agreements are made between employers, employees and governments about working from home and spreading travel times.

The Mobility Alliance states that practice is still lagging behind the previously expressed intentions: ‘Previous research by the Mobility Alliance has already shown that a majority of the respondents are in favor of making work, school and travel times more flexible if this means that the traffic on the roads and, in the long run, also back on public transport is reduced. But in the meantime hardly any concrete agreements have been made.’ The alliance, which includes the Rai Association, the Bovag, the Dutch Railways and the ANWB, also emphasizes that more investment in infrastructure is essential.
