Audi introduces a new variant of the R8. The German supercar was already available as a V10 Performance Quattro, but is now also available as a rear-wheel drive Performance.
Anyone who thinks that an Audi R8 is by definition four-wheel drive is wrong. The German brother of the Lamborghini Huracán, in all cases equipped with a 5.2 V10, was available as RWS and later as RWD. That rear-wheel drive RWD variant was slightly less potent with 540 hp than the regular 570 hp version with Quattro drive. The mighty superlative of the R8, the normally 620 hp R8 V10 Performance Quattro, now also gets a rear-wheel drive alternative.
Just like the previous rear-wheel drive versions, the Audi R8 V10 Performance RWD, as the new variant is called, is slightly less potent than its Quattro brothers. Is the RWD version suddenly a weak bite? Well no. On the contrary. The ten-cylinder stamps a still fierce 570 hp and 550 Nm via a seven-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels.
Audi supplies the R8 V10 Performance RWD just like its four-wheel drive variant as a Coupé and as a Spyder. The closed version thunders to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 329 km/h. As a V10 Performance RWD, the Spyder is marginally slower. The open R8 in this configuration takes 3.8 seconds for the 0-100 sprint and stops at 327 km/h. A mechanical differential lock is standard of the party. Fun for the gummers: in Sport mode, the R8 allows controlled drifts. New for a rear-wheel drive R8 is Dynamic Steering.
The rear-wheel drive Performance R8s are mounted on lightweight wheels measuring 19-inches at the front and 20-inches at the rear. Ceramic brakes are available at an additional cost. The Audi R8 V10 Performance RWD will be available in various versions from the beginning of 2022, prices will follow later.
