Every month, Microsoft provides cumulative updates that can be downloaded and installed manually.
For Microsoft, the second Tuesday of the month is “Patch Tuesday”. The publisher releases a set of fixes for Windows that are normally automatically downloaded and installed by Windows Update. If you don’t want to wait or want Windows Update to download when you need all of your internet connection bandwidth, you can do a manual download and installation. This solution is also valid in the event of a problem during the download by Windows Update, which sometimes happens.
1 – Determine what is the number of your version of Windows 10
The various major Windows 10 updates, which take place every 6 months, correspond to specific numbers, their launch date.
- 1803: Spring Creators Update (when available)
- 1709: Fall Creators Update
- 1703: Creators Update
- 1607: Anniversary Update
- 1511: November Update
- 1507: initial release of Windows 10
2 – Download the monthly cumulative update
Go to the site www.catalog.update.microsoft.com and type in the Windows 10 search box followed by the version number you are interested in, for example Windows 10 1709 for the Fall Creators Update. Then click at the top of the table on the mention Last update to sort in descending order of dates.

Find in the list which cumulative update corresponds to the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) version of your operating system. If in doubt, use the keystroke

Click on the button To download, located on the right, of the update you want. Then save the .msu file that is offered.

3 – Install the update
Launch File Explorer and go to the Downloads folder. Double-click on the .msu file to start installing the update and click on the OK or Accept buttons when necessary. Your computer will then restart.
